Since 1916, workshops and exhibitions for artists and crafts persons as well as classes for children were held at 23 Prince Arthur Avenue. As the technical schools and crafts organizations took over the teaching of art, the emphasis of the Women's Art Association turned to assisting young students in various fields of the arts.
The first Women's Art Association Scholarship was granted in 1948 to the Ontario College of Art, which was, in fact, the first scholarship for the College. We now give 13 annual scholarships awards.
Funding for some scholarships has been provided by bequests and we continue to augment the rest through fundraising events.
- Mary Dignam Award 1948 - Ontario College of Art and Design
- In 1948 the members of the Women's Art set up a scholarship for the Ontario College of Art in memory of WAAC founder and first president, Mary Dignam.
- Josephine Harper Award 1956 - National Ballet School
- Mrs. Harper was a president of and a substantial contributor to the Women's Art Association of Canada. She donated the funds to establish this scholarship for the National Ballet School.
- Luella McCleary Award 1974 - Faculty of Music, U of T
- In 1974 the WAAC established the Luella McCleary Scholarship at the Faculty of Music to honour her substantial bequest to the WAAC. She had been an active member of the club for many years.
- Margaret Maude Phillips Awards 1981 - Faculty of Music, University of Toronto; Royal Conservatory of Music; National Ballet School; Ontario College of Art and Design
- In 1981, the Scholarship Fund was named a beneficiary in the will of Margaret Maude Phillips and four new scholarships were created. Her sister, Evelyn, had been a member of the WAAC and a frequent contributor to the Scholarship Fund. Funds were also used to assist the Royal Conservatory of Music with the purchase of a Derazey Violin.
- Barbara Wilkes Award 1995 - Royal Conservatory of Music
- The family of Barbara Wilkes donated money in her memory to the Scholarship Fund for a student studying piano.
- Elizabeth Blackstock Award 2001 - Ontario College of Art and Design
- After retirement, career medical artist Elizabeth Blackstock concentrated on water colour paintings and maintained a studio at the WAAC for many years. The Margaret Maude Phillips award was renamed in her honour in 2001.
- WAAC Virginia Bogle Award 2002 - Royal Conservatory of Music
- Virginia Bogle was a member of the Scholarship Committee for over 30 years. She helped raise funds and was liaison to arts institutions scholarship recipients. Mrs. Bogle has had a lifelong interest in music, thus the WAAC chose to honour her in 2002 by adding her name to a scholarship established at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
- Sonja Koerner Award 2002 - Faculty of Music
- Since 1981 the Women's Art Association of Canada has presented the Women's Art Association Margaret Maude Phillips Award to a student in the Music Education programme at the Faculty of Music. By renaming the award for Sonia Koerner, a director of the WAAC, we honour her many contributions.
- Mary Bursey Scholarship 2004 - Sheridan College
- Mary Bursey was a longtime member of the WAAC and loved to paint. When she died in 2002 her family asked that donations be given to the WAAC to establish a scholarship in her name. (award ends in 2011)
- Linda Stearns Scholarship 2004 - National Ballet School
- Linda Stearns left money to the scholarship fund to honour lifelong family friends Ruth Upjohn and Dorothy Seixas. Ms. Sterns' 2003 obituary stated "her life revolved around the dance world" thus a scholarship at The National Ballet School in her memory was deemed the most appropriate way to honour her wishes.
- Sonja Koerner Award 2005 - George Brown College
- Sonja has a great interest in theatre so it was decided that another scholarship would be awarded to a student in the theater program at George Brown Theatre School.
